Indian Director Sues Netflix Says Squid Game Rip Off Of His 2009 Film

Indian Director Sues Netflix, Says Squid Game ‘Rip-Off’ of His 2010 Film

Indian director, also known as screenwriter and producer, claims Netflix’s popular show Squid Game was copied from his 2010 film titled ‘Games of Karma’

South Korean survival drama Squid Game gained worldwide popularity upon its 2021 release, however, it now faces allegations of plagiarism.

Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer Suneel Darshan has filed a lawsuit against streaming giant Netflix, alleging that elements of its popular South Korean survival drama Squid Game were lifted from his 2010 film Games of Karma.

Squid Game, which premiered on Netflix in September 2021, became an instant global hit, amassing a vast international audience and garnering critical acclaim.

However, Darshan claims that the show bears striking similarities to his own film, Games of Karma, which was released in India over a decade ago.

In his lawsuit, Darshan alleges that Squid Game copied several key elements from his film, including the concept of a group of contestants participating in deadly games for a chance to win a large sum of money, the use of masks and uniforms by the guards, and the elimination of contestants through a series of violent challenges.

Darshan is seeking compensation for damages, including loss of earnings and reputational harm, as well as an injunction to prevent Netflix from further distributing Squid Game.

Netflix has so far declined to comment on the lawsuit.

If Darshan's claims are proven true, it would be a significant development in the ongoing debate surrounding copyright infringement in the entertainment industry.

It would also raise questions about the due diligence conducted by Netflix before acquiring and distributing content.

The case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how it will be resolved.

In the meantime, it serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting intellectual property and ensuring that creators are fairly compensated for their work.
