New Strain of Mpox Spreading in Africa Has CDC Concerned
Deadly Strain of Mpox
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has alerted doctors to be on the lookout for a new strain of mpox spreading through parts of Africa. The new strain, called clade 1b, is worrisome because of its virulence. Nearly 4% of clade 1b mpox cases are deadly, compared to less than 1% of cases of the previously circulating strain.
Cases Confirmed in Four Countries
Cases of clade 1b mpox have been confirmed in four countries in Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria. The CDC is concerned that the strain may be spreading to other countries in the region and beyond.
Symptoms and Treatment
The symptoms of mpox are similar to those of smallpox, but milder. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash. There is no specific treatment for mpox, but supportive care can help relieve symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
Prevention
There is no vaccine for mpox, but there are steps you can take to prevent infection. These include:
- Avoiding contact with people who are sick with mpox.
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water.
- Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
- Getting rid of rodents and insects that may carry mpox.
If you think you may have mpox, it is important to see a doctor right away.
