Scottsdale Council Weighs In
Scottsdale officials have expressed concerns over traffic congestion, increased noise levels, and the potential loss of open space if the district is built in northeast Phoenix. Councilmember Lisa Borowsky emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of the project's potential consequences.
Legal Battle with Phoenix
The Coyotes and their development firm, Bluebird Development, have filed a $2.3 billion lawsuit against the city of Phoenix for damages incurred due to legal obstacles. The team had previously planned to relocate to Arizona State University's Tempe campus but faced setbacks due to Phoenix's opposition.
Coyotes' Quest for a Home
In 2016, the Coyotes announced their intention to move to Tempe and build a new arena. However, the deal fell through amidst legal disputes. The current development represents the latest effort by the team to secure a permanent home.
Funding and Revenue
The Coyotes retained 80% of the $21 million naming rights fee with Gila River Resorts Casino, with the casino paying $750,000 annually for advertising rights within and outside the arena. This revenue stream is expected to contribute towards the project's financing.
